The first rider to defeat four-time TrialGP Women World Champion Emma Bristow – Sherco in top-flight competition since May 2015, it’s all change for Germany’s Theresa Bauml – Montesa this season.
The twenty-year-old from Koblenz, who finished third in the 2017 FIM Women’s World Championship, ended the British star’s incredible twelve-round win-streak with a four-mark victory at TrialGP Italy – the final event of the series – last season. Following her famous victory, Theresa promptly jumped ship from her two-stroke Beta machine and will be going for gold in 2018 on a four-stroke Montesa.
“Of course, the four-stroke is a different bike and it takes some time to get used to it,” says Theresa, “but the first time I tested the Montesa in October it felt like it is my own bike and I enjoyed riding this bike. The Montesa is very smooth which is perfect for me. The change was not hard because I love every ride with my well-prepared bike and I wouldn’t have changed if I had any doubts.”
Reflecting on her stunning victory at the Metzeler Offroad Park at Arco di Trento last September, it is clear that Theresa intends to use it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
“A little dream came true and I will never forget this day, this feeling to be on top of the podium. It was the result of hard work and great support from all my partners and friends. Everyone knows that Emma is number one for good reasons. I am working hard to do this again and I know that I can.”
The TrialGP Women campaign kicks off in Japan at the start of June and Theresa is relishing the prospect of the first-ever visit by the feet-up female classes to the Far East.
“I have never been there before and I am very excited to be going to Japan. Many riders told me many great things about being there – the Twin Ring Motegi, the people, the food. Let’s see what the season brings. I can’t wait for it.”
