The little-known French town of Pau situated on the northern edge of the Pyrenees and a two-hour drive south of the more recognised city of Toulouse has the honour of staging the 2017 FIM X-Trial des Nations later today. Whilst this will be the first time that the town has hosted this particular event, it will be the second time it has been home to a World competition with Pau having been part of the FIM X-Trial World Championship back in 2015.

On that night two years ago it was Adam Raga then Gas Gas mounted who came out on top with a rare victory over his normally dominant Spanish counterpart Toni Bou – Repsol Honda. Defeated by three marks on this occasion Bou finished five marks clear of the then Beta rider Jeroni Fajardo who completed a not so unusual all Spanish podium.

In February 2015 Albert Cabestany – Sherco made it an all-Spanish top four as Alexandre Ferrer – Sherco played his part in upholding some home honour as he claimed fifth spot. Fellow Frenchman Loris Gubian then Gas Gas mounted ended the night in sixth, whilst Britain’s James Dabill then riding for Vertigo and Eddie Karlsson – Montesa occupied seventh and eighth positions respectively the last time Pau hosted an FIM event.
