Currently holding down a fantastic fifth in the 2018 FIM X-Trial World Championship with only one round to go, Miquel Gelabert – Sherco could very well be the surprise package in this year’s TrialGP class.

The twenty-year-old from Barcelona has electrified indoor audiences with his silky-smooth skills and caused a major upset when he finished on the second step of the podium at round four in Strasbourg at the end of January, beaten only by his legendary compatriot Toni Bou.

Now he is aiming to take this fantastic form outdoors when the 2018 FIM Trial World Championship gets under way at Camprodon in Spain on 19/20 May.

“It’s going so well,” says Miquel. “I trained so hard to be competitive indoors and I am going to try to do the same in TrialGP. There is just one key to be competitive outdoors – keep training hard to improve my non-stop riding.”

After finishing eleventh last year with his best results seventh-placed finishes in France and the Czech Republic, the talented young Spaniard went into the off-season determined to sharpen his skills with a new training programme.

“This winter I trained better – looking at more specific areas – and I think I was more motivated. The most important thing is to arrive in good condition for the first round in Camprodon so most of the days I trained to ride non-stop because it’s more difficult to understand the technique.”

In common with all up-and-coming Trial riders, Miquel’s dream is to rise to the very top of the sport but for 2018 he has set himself what he believes to be an attainable target.

“My ambition, my dream, is to be some day a World Champion. That is the reason why I train so hard. It’s too early to know where I will finish this season, but my goal is top five. It’s going to be hard but I think it’s a good target.”
