The former European champion and eight times winner of his native national championship, without doubt has the pedigree to confirm himself as a real contender in what is perhaps the most hotly contested class in the new look TrialGP series. Since moving up to the premier division back in 2010 Matteo has never placed outside the top ten rankings each season he has competed, although he was absent from the FIM Trial World Championship during 2015.

A close friend and welcomed training partner of reigning TrialGP Champion Toni Bou – Repsol Honda, Grattarola will also be four-stroke mounted in 2018 having made the switch to riding a Montesa Cota 4RT during this winter.

Whilst there is no questioning Matteo’s ability and potential to capture the Trial2 title, which since last season carries full FIM World Championship status, he will face stiff opposition in a class packed with talent and where consistency is everything as last year’s eventual Trial2 Champion Iwan Roberts confirmed.

Reinforcing the importance of the Trial2 class Matteo will be joined by fellow ex-TrialGP rider Loris Gubian – Gas Gas, as they look to fight off last year’s vice-champion Gabriel Marcelli – Montesa and other top five ranked riders Francesc Moret – Montesa, Toby Martyn – Montesa and Dan Peace – Gas Gas plus 2017 Trial125 Champion Lorenzo Gandola – Scorpa.

With Trial2 entries having already reached 80% of capacity – it looks odds on that this class will be oversubscribed by the time Grattarola and co kick off their respective campaigns come the opening TrialGP Spain event on 19-20 May.

During Sport7’s recent visit to Rock Oil’s newly built state of the art headquarters on the outskirts of Warrington, the opportunity was taken to confirm the final details of the agreement and to ink the deal that provides the potential for the parties to further extend their partnership through to 2021.

Speaking about the new agreement, Greg Hewitt Managing Director of Rock Oil said: “The decision to renew the partnership was a very easy one to make. We have an established relationship and throughout 2017 the team delivered a high-quality championship and went the extra mile to add further value.”

Hewitt went on to say. “This year see’s Rock Oil celebrate its ninetieth anniversary and going through a dramatic period of change and growth. I am delighted for Rock Oil to be involved with the series in 2018 and beyond and I’m sure the team will continue to drive the championship forward and generate more awareness for the Rock Oil brand.”

Confirming their extensive association with the sport Hewitt ended by explaining. “Rock Oil has a long history of working in trials and this sector of two-wheeled motorsport was one of the first supported by the company in the early eighties. To now be in a position to be a part of the FIM Trial World Championship in the new TrialGP era is fantastic, which coupled with other partnerships with the likes of Dougie Lampkin and current TrialGP Women World Champion Emma Bristow ensure Rock Oil remains at the forefront of Trial competition.”

Adding his own words TrialGP Championship Director Jake Miller said. “Loyalty is one of our key values at Sport7 and is something that is core to building the long-term success of the TrialGP Championship. Rock Oil had both the trust and faith to invest in the series last year, before the championship had had the chance to prove itself. Thanks to the excellent relationship we enjoyed over the first term, when we actually managed to surpass expectations, we have now been able to repay their foresight by ensuring that Rock Oil remains an important and prominent partner over the coming years.”

Once again, the various individual titles will be decided over eight events running from May through to September, with the Trial des Nations bringing a close to the season proper later the same month.

Rnd 1 – Spain, Camprodon – 19 / 20 May – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125

There is no disputing Spain’s place at the head of the current World order, and to have the honour of getting the new campaign underway. The already highly applauded Noassar training area just outside the town of Camprodon, and north of Barcelona really confirmed its credibility to host top level events following an epic opening encounter at the venue last season.

The amazing hillside location offers not only some amazing scenery but also vast scope to create a variety of very natural and not typically ‘Spanish’ sections. With lessons learned from the first edition TrialGP Spain is set to be a sizzling start to the 2018 season and is one not to be missed by any real Trial fans.

With affordable flights to both Barcelona and Girona, you have the perfect excuse for some Spring sunshine.

Rnd 2 – Japan, Motegi – 01 / 02 / 03 June – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125 / TrialGP Women / Trial2 Women

No season would be complete without a visit to the iconic Twin Ring Motegi circuit, and this time TrialGP Japan will make history as it hosts the women for the first time ever, and include all five classes. The sprawling grounds that extend around the two interlinked tarmac circuits not only incorporate some excellent Trial terrain, but also include what can only be described as ‘Disneyland for petrol-heads’. The only flyway event in 2018, a trip to Japan is certainly worth the long journey from Europe especially with its two days of competition after Friday’s Qualification. The onsite hotel adds an extra level of convenience and a tour of the incredible Honda museum cannot be missed.

The Trial itself is very compact and easy to follow on foot, with a mixture of man-made hazards and natural hill climbs, often muddy all being very accessible. The Japanese hospitality and organisation is second to none, and whilst the food is very different to that found in Europe, there is plenty of variety and western alternatives to cater for all appetites. Transfer from Tokyo by hire car or train is relatively straightforward with many European languages spoken throughout Japan.

Certainly a trip of a lifetime, but one that needs ticking off the bucket list.

Rnd 3 – Andorra, Sant Julia – 16 / 17 June – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125

TrialGP Andorra is a regular stop for the series, though this year will see a much changed course and new paddock as the long standing event embraces the new TrialGP era. The steep sided, huge rocky valley that defines the southern part of Andorra is the backdrop for one of the most unforgiving venues in the calendar.

High altitude, hot weather and super gruelling sections have earned Andorra its tough reputation and is a real test for even the top riders. This year’s more compact course stays closer to the town centre of Sant Julia, which will again house the paddock / start area and opening / closing section plus Saturday’s Qualification hazard. With plenty of well-priced hotels close to hand and the added bonus of being able to pick up some tax-free gifts, Andorra is well worth a visit.

Rnd 4 – Portugal, Gouveia – 23 / 24 June – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125

Absent from the calendar since 2015, Portugal makes a welcomed return to the tour having organised events as part of the FIM Trial World Championship since 1999. The small town of Gouveia last hosted a round of the series back in 2004 and has kept its hand in delivering top level off road events having staged a highly successful EnduroGP competition in more recent years.

Fantastic local scenery and hospitality, plus excellent paddock facilities and an absolute abundance of huge boulders means that Gouveia has all the ingredients to deliver a great weekend of action and entertainment not to mention a TrialGP Portugal to remember. The transfer, heading south east from the coast, from Porto airport is a simple affair with the majority of the journey being on motorway.

Portugal remains one of the most affordable countries in Europe and is packed with culture too.

Rnd 5 – France, Auron – 14 / 15 July – TrialGP / Trial2 / TrialGP Women/ Trial2 Women / TrialE

Always a key part of the championship TrialGP France has a great and long history of serving up some of the most memorable events over the last forty years. The 2018 edition breaks new ground as the beautiful ski resort of Auron welcomes TrialGP for the very first time, but only after having hosted a French national event as a prelude to this year’s World status competition.

Sitting in the Alps just north of the famous French coastal city of Nice, the mountains that surround Auron are snow covered in the winter and are the perfect playground for many thousands of skiers. Come summer the lush green hillsides are more obviously covered in a mass of rocky outcrops that will provide the ideal test for the World’s best riders. TrialGP France will include one of the two TrialE (Electric) events scheduled for 2018, the inaugural title being won by Marc Colomer contested over one event in 2017.

With this also being the second round of the women’s series, early indications are that TrialGP France will be one of the most spectacular and scenic of the year and yet another not to be missed.

Rnd 6 – Belgium, Comblain au Pont – 21 / 22 July – TrialGP / Trial2 / TrialE

Having hosted two previous events, TrialGP Belgium returns to the town of Comblain au Pont for what is described as the ‘Monaco’ of Trial. Squeezed into the narrow main street the paddock has a unique and special atmosphere that is added to by the close proximity of the local bars, restaurants and coffee shops. The sections are grouped well in nearby woodland with slippery rocks and steep climbs being the order of the day.

Back in the main street, the final hazard high on the castle topped embankment is really something to be seen. This will be added to this time around with the Qualification section also being built in the same area. Fans can enjoy the local beer plus the famous frites and mayonnaise whilst watching the drama unfold right before them. Adding weight to the occasion the 2018 TrialE winner will be crowned come Sunday afternoon.

Rnd 7 – Great Britain, Silsden – 1 / 2 September – TrialGP / Trial2 / TrialGP Women / Trial2 Women

Trial is really coming home, with the iconic and much revered Addingham mooorside venue hosting a round of the series for the very first time. Overlooking the town of Silsden, which has been home to three generations of the famous Lampkin family, the huge granite boulders that define the hillside location will offer a formidable challenge to the best male and female riders who will gather here come early September.

By far the most compact course of any in the 2018 calendar, TrialGP Great Britain will be a real delight for fans with all sections within a very close radius. With plenty of home interest in all classes, and especially with reigning TrialGP Women Champion Emma Bristow looking to retain her title on British soil, a large turnout is expected in what remains widely regarded as the birthplace of Trial.

With the venue having a limited crowd capacity, the early booking of advance tickets is highly recommended to avoid missing out on what promises to be a huge weekend in the TrialGP calendar.

Rnd 8 – Italy, Pietramurata Di Dro – 15 / 16 September – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125

For the third year in succession TrialGP Italy will bring the championship to its climax, and following its successful series debut last September the purpose-built facility at Pietramurata Di Dro has now proved itself as the perfect venue to host yet another passion filled weekend. The Metzeler Offroad Park, which sits in the shadow of the towering mountain behind it, offers a mixture of natural and man-made sections all within easy walking distance.

Italy very much like Spain has a long and rich history of being home to some of the biggest and best events the FIM Trial World Championship has seen during its forty-four-year existence, and this year’s TrialGP Italy looks set to continue this special tradition. Fly into any of Milan’s three airports before enjoying a weekend full of action and some of Italy’s typically tasty cuisine.

The TrialGP Italy will see the 2018 titles decided in three classes – TrialGP / Trial2 / Trial125 – the latter being the first time this division has had full World Championship status.

TDN – Czech Republic, Sokolov – 22 / 23 September – Men / Women

Whilst the individual championships will have been decided one week earlier in Italy, the real end of season celebrations will take place at the lakeside venue as Sokolov hosts this year’s TDN – Trial des Nations. Contested by more than thirty teams over three classes the TDN is often regarded as the Olympic of Trial.

This year’s inter country team competition will see Qualification for all riders take place on Saturday before both Women’s and Men’s TDN play out together on Sunday for the first time ever in the long history of this team competition.

The waterside paddock and slippery hazards in the nearby wooded areas will again combine well to deliver a memorable weekend. As per last year’s TrialGP Czech Republic man-made sections will be included close to the start / finish area to add further atmosphere to this unique event.

Regular and affordable flights to the must visit city of Prague mean that the ‘2018 closing party’ is sure to feature high on many people’s short list.

This recognition comes after the success of the five-round series this year that saw a large increase in the number of riders taking part in the entire Championship; there was a record breaking entry at TrialGP Great Britain, when the class was over-subscribed for the first time in its history.

Entries for the new FIM Trial125 World Championship will open in early January for pre-selected riders (comprising this year’s top fifteen Trial125 ranked riders) and for the soon-to-be-confirmed pre-selected riders in the other class as well. As in 2017, each class will be limited, with pre-selected riders having a two-week priority period before entries are then opened to all riders (subject to approval) on a first come first served basis.

Following this change approved by the FIM General Assembly in Andorra, FIM Sports Director Fabio Muner commented: “This class, opened for young riders from 14 years upwards, underwent successful changes during the 2017 season with an average of 20 riders per event. The number of events was slightly reduced with the addition of an Overseas Event which generated fresh interest. This evolution corresponds to a logic of running Trial competition classes in line with the market for young riders, thereby increasing the visibility of the Championship and guaranteeing new generations for the future of Trial.”

Speaking on behalf of Sport7, TrialGP Championship Director Jake Miller said. “We would like to thank the FIM for recognising Trial125 as a true World Championship and as a highly important platform for developing the next generation of champions. Trial125, our rookie class, represents the future of our sport and is something that ranks high amongst our priorities as we look to build on the success of our initial season as promoters.”

Created in honour of the late Martin Lampkin, the first ever winner of the series back in 1975, the trophy’s contemporary design plays homage to the early era of the championship and the machines of that period.

Fourteen different names of the FIM Trial World Champions from 1975 through to 2017 adorn the engraved plates that shroud the square base on which the main structure of the trophy rests. Measuring over three hundred millimetres high and weighing in at just under ten kilogrammes the metallic work of art has been beautifully crafted by TrialGP series partner Hope Technology. Designed, engineered and hand finished in their British factory the shining silver creation is a fitting salute to all those riders who have lifted the title over the years.

Using the occasion of the annual FIM Awards ceremony hosted in the principality of Andorra, Martin Lampkin’s widow Isobel and his eldest son Dougie, a previous seven times FIM Trial World Champion himself, were on hand to present the new trophy to its first ever actual recipient Toni Bou whose name has now been engraved on the lower section for a record eleventh occasion.

Delighted to be the first holder of the championship trophy Bou said. “It is a great honour to be the first FIM Trial World Champion to receive this very special and beautiful trophy here in Andorra. I would like to thank Sport7 for bringing this trophy to the championship and recognising all the many champions and also my own eleven titles too. Having Dougie and Isobel here to make the presentation made the moment even more special and I would like to thank the Lampkin family for their kind actions.”

Commenting on behalf of Sport7, TrialGP Championship Director Jake Miller added. “It seems incredible that this rich and historic FIM World Championship has never had an official trophy to recognise and celebrate the great champions of this Sport. As well as our work to promote and develop the series, we always felt it was our duty to create a lasting legacy for the championship, especially given our long and close association with Martin and the Lampkin family. To finally realise this magnificent trophy in Martin’s honour and to have his family here to present it to Toni is something that we are very proud to have made happen.”

Sitting high on the hill overlooking the famous Yorkshire town of Silsden, Addingham Moorside represents a genuine Trial venue with its huge granite boulders and rocky outcrops being amongst the most revered in Great Britain.

Global Trial fans will know the significance of the town of Silsden with it being home to several generations of the highly respected Lampkin family who have brought so much to the slow speed discipline over the years. Moreover, it was also the home of the late and first ever FIM Trial World Champion Martin Lampkin who lifted the inaugural title back in 1975.

Used almost daily as his preferred practice area during the height of his career, it is no coincidence that Martin’s eldest son Dougie was so dominant for near on a decade with this awesome facility on his doorstep and readily available as his private playground. As well as playing its part as a top-level venue, having hosted numerous national championship events, the rugged hillside has also been eternally responsible for holding countless youth competitions that have given rise to the next generation of Trial riders.

With the venue now under the careful management of Yeadon, Guiseley and District Motor Club, Sport7 as the promoter of the TrialGP series are pleased to have reached an agreement with the club, the various landowners and ACU whose early co-operation and willingness has been key to being able to include Addingham Moorside in the 2018 TrialGP calendar.

Initial planning is already underway to make TrialGP Great Britain one of the biggest and most important stops of the 2018 series with a full weekend of activities being prepared to give Trial fans two days of unique and exceptional entertainment.

Speaking about this exciting announcement TrialGP Championship Director Jake Miller said. “Firstly we would like to say a big thank you to Yeadon, Guiseley and District Motor Club, the associated landowners and the ACU who have been nothing but positive since we proposed to bring TrialGP to Addingham Moorside.”

“Having previously delivered five hugely successful TrialGP events in Britain, three at Hawkstone Park and two in Fort William, we feel that we have both the experience and the team of people to create something very special at this iconic venue, that is without doubt one of the best Trial facilities in the country.”

“As Great Britain is considered the place where Trial first began we always wanted to bring TrialGP back to a venue that was true to the sport. We believe that the new TrialGP format will be ideally suited to this compact setting and will deliver incredible and easily viewable action. Additionally, qualification will be an amazing spectacle on this famous hillside and will be sandwiched into Saturday’s non-stop schedule that will include some additional special events.”

Miller ended by explaining. “We are already working with the local authorities to put a traffic management plan in place so access both into and out of the venue will be as easy as possible for visitors, whilst also respecting the needs of the nearby residents. However due to the restricted nature of the site it looks like we may have to set a limit on the number of spectators we can allow into the venue. Whist we do not envisage that this will impact the crowd size significantly, it will be important for fans to realise that tickets will be available on a first come first served basis when they go on sale early in the new year.”

The three-day event, starting with qualification for both Women and Men – this being the first time TDN has included this new start selection process – on Friday afternoon had a real festival feel about it, with the riders thoroughly enjoying the end of season team competition.

Spain’s Women gave the sizeable audience plenty to cheer about on Saturday as they set the winning tone for the weekend ahead of the Men’s Trail on Sunday. The female Spanish trio prevented Great Britain continuing their victorious run before they then handed the baton over to their much favoured male counterparts who were relishing the chance to notch up yet another TDN win, especially with this edition being on home soil.

Bou and co did not fail to deliver and absolutely destroyed the opposition in the World Trophy class, whilst Australia won a nail biting encounter over the USA in the International category.

The Highlights show incorporates all the best moments from all three days of action, as the TDN brought the 2017 tour to an end properly.
